R.I.P. Ms. Melodie

R.I.P. Ms. Melodie 

(of Boogie Down Productions) 

Ms. Melodie, ex-wife of KRS-ONE and a prominent member of the
Boogie Down Productions crew, passed away July 18th
according to numerous news sources.
Ms. Melodie, born Ramona Scott, was a member of the
influential Boogie Down Productions crew and released her
first album, Diva, in 1989 on Jive Records.
She is best known for her hit video, “Live On Stage” and
her hit single “Hype According to Ms. Melodie.”
Her most memorable performance was on the 1989 single
“Self Destruction” and she also has a cameo in Queen
Latifah’s video “Ladies First.”
Ms. Melodie was a native of Brooklyn, NY and is survived
by two sons. At this time, her cause of death is unknown.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family.

Rising New York based underground emcee Dolo the Bandit is bringing raw lyricism over pure Boom Bap hip hop influenced beats and chopped up samples on his latest mixtape The Heist - Code: Black Op!  That's the type of hip hop we all love over here at Boom Bap Renaissance, so we decided to show support to the rising emcee by putting our followers onto his mixtape.....

Up and Coming emcee Ike Ellis spits hard over a Luther Ingram "If Lovin' You Is Wrong" Sample

While mainsteam rap music has a slew of half assed rappers spitting simplistic lyrics over synthetic computerized instrumentals, the Underground hasn't forgotten it's roots, keeping the art of crate digging and sample flipping alive. One of the latest emcees to rock over a classic sample is Ike Ellis. Listen to his lead single "Loving You" wich is featured on his forthcoming album Cornbread (due to be released this June) that samples Luther Ingram's "If Lovin' You Is Wrong". The song has Ike Ellis spitting over a spead up version of the original vocals from the song on the hook as well as the instruments from the sample chopped up for the verses. Recently, the African styled hip hop group Blaq Planet hooked up with Shabba Ranks and Krumb Snatcha for the first single from the forthcoming Blaq Planet Mixtape.  The song is titled “So Much Trouble” and you can download it here at this link

The group Blaq Planet consists of Sierra Leonean beatmaker/ songwriter and vocalist Olatunji Mason and Uganda born emcee now American citizen Ston-city.

Olatunji Mason also reached out to Boom Bap Renaissance beatmaker J-Coleman to collaborate on a track for the forthcoming Blaq Planet mixtape (that also features Krumb Snatcha and Shabba Ranks).  Check out the video of the beat listening session between the two rising producers here.
